It was save the world, not save new york.
New york has nothing to do, the explosion has nothing to do with it.

If Sylar got Clair the whole world would had be doomed forever, since nobody could kill Sylar.
Sylar would had become indestructible.

Save the cheerleader, save the world.

The world needed to be saved from Sylar.

in the latest episode future Hiro mentions how "The world had become a darker place"
that's because of Sylar. He had been able to shape shift and now he is the president.
