Question about Peter

I'm just watching Series 1 because I missed some of the early episodes, particularly where Sylar gets the power of telekenesis. I'd assumed that that was the power he was born with, but it appears he stole that one.

Peter can absorb powers, but I always thought he absorbed the one native to the individual, so how did he get telekenisis from Sylar, and why didn't he get the other powers Sylar had stolen?

He probably got them all, he just didn't know what they were. He didn't know he could fly or that he had his mothers ability. Since he absorbed them without trying he wouldn't know.
