I've seen it mentioned many times how Sylar and Peter have similar powers. From what I see they have completely different (almost opposite) powers.

Peter's power is sort of an advanced empathetic response. I don't think it's limited to just other heroes (he dreams of Simone's father before he dies) but of course his uncanny natural bonding with heroes allows him to borrow their abilities as long as he is near them. (maybe later being near won't matter as much as "feeling" near)

Sylar's power is some kind of universal mechanical understanding. His mind relates to people as objects and his understanding of these objects allows him to extract and utilize the area of their brain that gives them their powers. To him this is no different than customizing himself with an "after-market" part. In other words: he used his powers to figure out how to steal other people's abilities but that theft is not necessarily the essence of his power. (the mechanical understanding is)

So even though Sylar and Peter both end up with other people's powers Sylar is not technically an "absorber." He's just good with his hands

I agree with you completely Peter and Sylar have completely different powers, I actually haven't heard this theory that they have the same powers. I've heard more people talk about how Micah and Sylar have similar powers but that is for another thread

Much said. I think people like to make the comparison that both men can use others' powers... but it's Sylar's powers that give him the ability to gain powers, while Peter does it naturally (and I'm not sure how long he can retain them). Peter's power is taking others powers... Sylar is just a dirty thief.

Nicely put, especially that Sylar is a dirty thief because it is true that he is taking powers that he is not initially supposed to receive while Peter takes powers but that is just how it works for him

Thank-you.

Sylar is so out-of-sync with the natural order of things... that's where is evil lies.

Like HRG said the influx of so many powers be partly to blame for Sylar's insanity

I think Peter is becoming a very interesting character.....he's still a pretty whiny b**ch, but he is getting more intereting, once he can control himself he will be very important.

One thing i wanted to mention would be his dreams. Peter has been having these dreams since the first scene of the first episode. He is obviously to be the prophet of the group. While Issac can paint the future also making him a seer he seems to be much more straight forward about it. He paints an image that will happen in the future. So far Peter's dreams have been more soothsayer than straight up image of what is to come. He flew in his dream around the city (never really happened like that....but he did fly). He saw the dying old man in his dream.....the dying old man saw him in his dream. He dreamt about his brother coming to get him out of jail (which later came true) but in the midst of that dream he saw Sylar saying...you don't know what power is.....and last but not least he saw himself flaring up.....not necessarily exploding, just glowing....so maybe he is going to go boom and something will stop it....or maybe the combination of all the powers at once cause him to enter a different state of evolution entirely. We really don't know at this point.

Another thing I wanted to say was that it was really interesting how when Matt and Peter met they had feedback for a little bit. That was a really cool touch. I was wondering what would happen with them in the same room.....very cool scene.

Yeah I think Peter is a great character, definetley my favourite. Yes I think your right about Peter having prophetic dreams but I don't believe he is going to blow up I believe he might of been seeing himself as the radioactive guy or he might have taken that guys powers for a second and was not able to control them, but then gets a hold of it at last minute. Guess we'll just have to wait though

Peter's developing into a good lead character for the series. He has visionary characteristics, which could lead him to become a leader of sorts if the Heroes do band together (kinda hoping they don't and just keep bumping into each other here and there). Plus, I like that he comes off as a naive idealist. At first I thought his visions were just his blood ties to Nathan. Most of his visions involve him in someway...even the vision he had with Simone's father in that it involved flight. I'm beginning to lean towards that it's an actual power of his, or some long-term residue from his encouter with Isaac. Dunno.

And he's not that whiny...comes off as idealistic...Mohinder's whiny...but that's another topic.

Peter has issues handling multiple powers at once, I think, especially if it's more than two. He was exposed to Matt, Claire and Nathan in a brief time period, and he may have overloaded his system when he became ill.

Word is some new character will come and teach him how to control his powers, i.e. maybe handle multiple powers at once...would be cool.

Peter has been my favorite character from the beginning, simply because his determination is something to be admired. To go to save a cheerleader you dont even know, for a reason you hardly understand, while knowing you are supposed to die... that takes guts. I see him as really being the leader of all the heroes since he is slowly bringing them all together. Plus he's not whiny...in what way is he whiny. He's idealistic as DCSimian said.

Plus DCsimian remeber he also cmae into contact with Sylar who has a few powers under his belt so who knows what that would so to his system.
