| I had previously speculated that their may be some degree of symbolism linking The Haitian's appearance and behavior with his ability. Tonight I got to thinking about some of the other characters. 1) I had once heard someone say that the name Petrelli contained the root Petra, which means rock in Greek. It seems as if Peter, if not the entire Petrelli family, is the rock upon which the story is founded. And Nathan can certainly be said to have stoic, rock-like qualities. 2) Lindermann was also the name of a nineteenth century American financier who was involved with the US Mint and at least one Coinage Act. In the show Linderman is clearly the man with the money pulling the strings. Also interestingly, this "real" Linderman was a doctor early in his career...and we all remember what "Heroes" Linderman's power was. 3) Sylar's real name is Gabriel Gray. Gabriel invokes many images in Western culture, but most commonly he is known as the chief messenger of God. He is also know as the Angel of Death and the Left Hand of God. When I add that to his last name...it gives more meaning. Sylar operates in shades of gray, he claims to be doing something noble or important, but on some level even he realizes that his actions are evil. He is a character with something of a dual nature, and so Gray seems an apt choice. 4) Nakamura, according to Wiki, means "middle village". Not so sure on the sybolism there, but here are a few thoughts. Could it be that Hiro represents some sort of a middle ground between two polar opposites, say Peter and Sylar for example? Could it mean that the Nakamura family acts as some sort of critical connection between Heroes of the past and those of the present? Or could it be that this is just a very common surname is Japan? 5) The Bennets: I'm sure you all got the symbolic nature of Noah...he is collecting/gathering Heroes as the biblical Noah did with animals and the Ark. I was thinking about the last name. This might be a bit of a stretch, but "Bennet" conjures in my mind the word "bien" which means good or well in both Spanish and French. We now know that Noah's intentions are positive so perhaps there is a connection with this name as well. 6) Off topic...the solar eclipse must also have some great significance...I wonder what it is. There could be other such symbolic connections, but I think this is a good start for me...and it's getting late. Let me know what you think. |
