Peter's 1 at a time Power- INCONSISTENCY?

Can someone please explain: if Peter can only have one power at a time, and we know he can't "choose" if he wants to take it or not (after seeing him take the deaf girl's power by accident), why is it that he doesn't take sullivan's power, nathan's power, or his mom's power when they touch (ie. shake hands, hug, hold hands, etc.)??? Even after shaking Sullivan's hand, hugging Nathan (we established in the past that he can take power even if he touches over clothing, which he did with Tracy Strauss on the airplane clearly leading to the crash), and contacting with his mother, he STILL had the fast ability, meaning he didn't get their power. For a second I thought Sullivan gave him the ability to hold more than one power! So yeah, can anyone explain this?! Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I dont know what the deal is here. The writers need to figure it out really fast because this is pissing a lot of people off. I just want peter to have a good power and be rid of this northern lights hearing ability. The show suffers with peter's lack of power and the shows lack of consistency.

I could have sworn peter has the ability to choose what power he wants. What i dont understand is why he didnt take claire's power when he saw her with HRG; this would have been great because he would have gotten his real powers back finally.

i thought the same thing about claire's power, but i guess if the writers made it that way for peter they'd have to make it that way for sylar, because even though matt made his mind forget he was sylar, his body obviously didnt forget he has all those powers, so his healing ability should heal his mind making him sylar again.

man, you guys are right- i forgot he came in contact with claire too! i agree with the whole healing thing. sylar's mind should have healed, unless what matt did was beyond that. also, it's still unclear, i think, what peter's "inherent" ability was.. like, maybe he acquired the ability to gain abilities.. right?

I believe Peter can choose when and which power he will take, remember the season 3 finale when Peter owns Sylar, Peter took shapeshifting from him, then as he sticks the needle in Sylars neck he says, "bet you didn't think i'd take this power" or something. Not only can Peter choose when to take a new power, he can choose from a bunch of different ones if he's toughing someone like Sylar.
The inconsitancies with powers in Heroes is brutal though, I always have to come up with my own reasons (when possible) for when they contridict themselves on powers. I'd say Peter got the ability to see sound when he saved the girl for being hit by the bus because, 1) he was using his power when he grabbed her, the fact he was using his super speed at the time might have accidently swapped with her powers or 2) Peter was not concentrating with so many emotions going through him that he accidently used his power and got the Seeing Sound stuff or 3) peter had no idea she had powers, when he touches Angella or Nathan he knows they have powers and he can choose not to take them, not knowing she had an ability could have taken him by suprise and he did not guard himself against taking her power because at the time he had no idea she had an ability.

interesting thoughts. i can sort of dig the fact that he can choose if he KNOWS, but will absorb a person's power if he DOESN'T KNOW they have a power. i think i can sort of see that. BUT.. he absorbed sullivan's power (as we saw, and by this definition), yet he STILL had super speed.

Peter didn't absorb Sullivan's power. Samuel Sullivan transferred "ink" into Peter (spinning compass tattoo) Peter has only had 3 powers so far. Mohinder's Super Strength, Edgar's Super Speed, and now Emma's Enhanced Synesthesia. Everytime he's gained an ability, he's lost his previous ability.

i thought of that too, but if TheMissingHero's theory is correct, then he absorbs powers unsuspectingly when he DOESN'T know they have a power. again, if that theory is true, then he should have absorbed sullivan's power just by touching him.

the theory may not be true, but i'm just saying, if it was, that too would have an inconsistency.
