Default Stop People Calling Heroes A X-men Rip Off

I was downloading Heroes Season 2 Ep.3 when I saw a comment by this mindless person. he said;

"Heroes is a Shameless rip off of X-Men".

I hate it when people call it a rip off just because it resembles x-men, apart from there being mutants in it there is nothing else that resembles x-men at all, it‘s just because they exist in the same sub-genre. That‘s like saying John Wayne movies are just rip offs of Clint Eastwood movies. They both have cowboys, both look the same except for the actors of course. There will be many more mutant type films and series in the future I can imagine, that doesn‘t make them x-men, for a start in x-men the mutants all wear costumes, Heroes doesn‘t, they are all shown how to control their powers by professor x, in Heros they have to teach themselves, there‘s no such thing as a mutant school, plus Heroes has a secret organisation only known as, "The company" nothing like that in x-men. I love x-men and yes Heroes is about mutants too, who cares, I mean because x-en has mutants does that mean that nobody else is allowed to create a story about mutants just because x-men had them, and let‘s face it, x-men didn‘t create the idea, the idea of mutants has always been there. Last but not least Heroes has "HIRO" he is a loveble guy and brings a smile to anyone watching him. Anyway just kiss my behind, I hate arrogance...

I couldn't agree more! The idea of people having special abilities didn't even start
with X-Men. It dates way back to 1934 with Mandrake the Magician. Superman is
another early one. Tim Kring said that his team of writers for this show are all
comic book fans and of course they will have taken influence from all the different
comic series they have read, but to say it rips off any particular series is just not
true.

Well, I have to say that Heroes always reminded me a bit of X-Men. But as I am a fan of both I can say that there IS a world of difference between the two. I wouldn't dare saying Heroes is a shameless rip-off! No way! Maybe it was a bit inspired by it, but what is wrong with that? I love it! I love Heroes, because it adds it's own special flavour to the genre. Heroes rocks!

I think there are certain similarities between the two, but Heroes is in a whole different catagory from X-men or Superman. There is something much more realistic about it. No one in tights, flying around to save the day. There are good guys and bad guys, but they have ambiguity about them when in comics today, people call themselves 'The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants'. No one truly thinks of themselves as "evil". Not really. Not even Sylar really thinks of himself as evil. He may acknowledge he is doing bad things, but he has reasons beyond just to be evil. I think the idea of superheroes is an old one, but Heroes gives it a different kind of spin. It has a different look and feel and is very different from X-men (which I love, by the way)

Well I had to just respond to this thread because having watched several episodes of Heroes I find it hard to believe anyone could deny that it is a shameless X-Men ripoff.

From what I have seen largely taken from the Chris Claremont's X-Men run but not limited to that. There are elements from various other Marvel sources.

The plots, characters, storylines, premises are all duplicated in such similar fashions that I am surprised there aren't more lawsuits pending.

I had to go online to see if it was connected to Marvel in some way, because I was so disturbed by the copious number of similarities.

If you truly think it isn't a X-Men ripoff then you need to read more of the X-Men storylines (or Marvel comics in general).

While the show seems to be well produced, I get sick to my stomach watching each episode as I am exposed to hauntingly familiar elements at every turn.

Lastly, I have a number of friends who like to call themselves evil. Not sure exactly the reasons for it but they like to have that "bad" mystique to themselves. I could never really relate to it but it definitely is conceivable. I personally think the "brotherhood" part is a bit more hard to believe to me!

I've read/loved the comics and and watched the Xmen movie.I don't think that hearoes s a rip off from the Xmen.
I don't exactly know why I love hearoes more than Xmen I think it is because hearoes has more mystery in it. I found Xmen movie both pedictable and dissapointing. When it comes to hearoes the peaple are dressed up normally and discovered they have powers and they don't know what to do with them.
Xmen:Everyone has powers and very confident with them. they wear costumes blah, blah, blah. I think peaple can relate to hearoes a bit more than Xman.
All the other comics that have been made into movies for example: Ghost rider, Fantasic 4 the return of the silver surfer.
Since I have read the comics I found some of the movies predictable and disapointing.

It's pretty clear that the writers are heavily influenced by comic books, so they based the show on these comics. Heroes is similar to Xmen, but not a rip-off. People who say it's a rip-off don't know the first thing about Heroes. Yet both shows appeal to the same audiance.

there are obviouse similarities to the x-men when you look at a few abilities, however, there are more similarities to the 4400. kring must have seen the 4400 and tought "nice idea, let me rip off the idea and make it my own," thats called plaguerism (or something spelt similar)
Dont get me wrong, i think heroes is better than the 4400, just, and it is different, i just think if no-one had written the 4400, no-one would have written heroes

There are undeniable similarites, but the two franchises react to the idea of mutants in two fundamentally different ways. X-Men is essentially about philosophy and the fate of the future. In it, it is believed that mutants are the next evolutionary stage of humanity. Mutants make up a significant percentage of the world's population in X-men, and have begun organizing and moving for civil rights reform. Heroes is about a much smaller group of people. I haven't counted, but we couldn't have seen more than thirty super-people. They are afraid and confused and, in most cases, have no where to go. There is no scientific explanation for why this is occuring, such as the X-gene. That being said, powers seem to have been directly ripped from Rogue, Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Iceman. I'm still waiting for a Hero who can control the weather. The X-men have also dealt with a virus that targets mutants although I'm pretty sure the Legacy Virus didn't strip mutants of their powers. Honestly, Heroes has differentiated itself enough for my tastes, and I'm just happy to have a mainstream, episodic, superhero drama.

I really think one should take into consideration the fact that there aren't many superpowers out there. I mean, some are taking characters and saying that okay, D.L has shadowcat's power, but there are only so many super powers you can have. Furthermore, I think if you really study X-men, then you'll realize that even within the comic books, they have characters with similar or exactly the same powers as other characters in the same comic.
