Default Why I hate Peter Petrelli

It seems to be I am the only person in the world who hates the character of Peter Petrelli. I've discussed it with my friends who also watch the show, and internet users and they all say they love the character and his place in the first series' tale. But I just can't warm to his character at all, he seems very two dimensional and frankly dull, and completely steals the limelight from all other characters in the show. To begin with when you find out he absorbs the powers around him, which he can then use, I was fine with this, it seemed interesting, a slight rip-off of Rogue from X-men but still, but when the conclusion came that he could use the powers from then onwards, using only his memory, this solidified my hatred of the character. What is the point of having a hero who has all the other heroes powers? Doesn't that make the others seem a little insignificant? And by the look of it, he is set to survive into the next series, I would have approved of his incredible growth in strength if he was to sacrifice himself at the end of the season to kill Syler, but I just have this horrible feeling that this isn't going to happen and he will continue his tiraid into series 2, fantastic...

well i definitely agree with you that he is pretty dopey and self-absorbed, and his character has the potential to overpower (in the story-telling sense) the other heroes as he picks up more abilities. however, i do think the opposition of peter vs sylar has some merit as an engine of the story line and it also makes for an interesting puzzle for viewers to piece together, particularly as we watch hiro travel in time--and especially after the episode String Theory--piecing together who is dead, who is alive, whether peter met them before sylar killed them, etc. for example, we now know that sylar killed candace the shape-shifter because he has her power, and we know that (at least in the future as it exists in that episode) Peter saves the cheerleader from Sylar etc.

but on the other hand, he seems to not be able to piece together the implications of everything that's going on around him -- for example when he sees his brother talking to that guy from Primatech Paper (I forget his name) he concludes that it must be ok, rather than recognizing that his bro is mixed up with some bad folks and perhaps it isn't the best place to bring claire. . .

I love it when people talk trash about epic characters after not knowing anything about previous comic characters. Rogue couldn't just absorb peoples powers, she absorbed their energy, damn near their souls which is what contained their powers. Sylar takes peoples souls.. Rogue sucked them out of people. Peter however is a different breed of "mutant." He has one of the most dazzling powers, the power to mimic an ability. Oddly enough, the X-Men had someone who could do that. Morph? No.. he had something similar but it was because he was a changling. There was a character, named Mimic. Peter, has those abilities except to a greater extent. Mimic could only hold a certain number of powers where Peter, can absorb as many as he wants it seems.

Don't knock the Heros only hope to defeat Sylar, they need Peter. =)

Rogue is a bad comparison to Peter. The Generation X character named Synch.

And yes, he is basically a carbon copy of this character, but I like his character. I just wish he was not able to permanently retain his power.
Technically, he is the only one with the power to stop Syler next to Hiro, but he could have every power Syler has just by being around him.

Synch (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Powers and skills

Synch's mutant power allows him to duplicate the powers of any mutant in his vicinity, essentially becoming in "synch" with that mutant (or more specifically, his or her mutagenic aura). Synch seemingly had greater mastery of his mutant abilities than his Generation X peers, often displaying more control over whatever mutant's powers he copied than that mutant. For example, in his debut issue he utilized Jubilee's (while under Emma Frost's telepathic control) pyrotechnic abilities in ways she never thought possible by blowing up an entire sector of the Phalanx (X-Men Vol. 1, No. 36, Pg. 23, September 1994). By "synching" with Jubilee, Everett simply gazed at the beings and was able to "detonate their very matter on a sub-atomic level," as so technically explained by Emma Frost. He was also able to utilize Chamber's powers to fly, something Chamber was never able to do. It had been theorized that in time, with practice, Synch would have been able to permanently retain any powers and abilities he acquired. Thus if not for his death, he would have possibly became an Omega-level mutant.

I agree that Peter is a bit flimsy but i think the show needs him: the others dont co-operate so they need a 'hero' of their own. I like the way he can use others powers at will.... i just wish he would grow some balls! Its all very well being super-hard, but whats the point if he cant even put up a good fight with Sylar? hope in the future he learns to kick some ass!

I think Heroes needs a character like Peter because, realistically, to defeat Sylar the heroes are going to need somebody who might actually be able to out-do him. (I mean, having a showdown between Slyar vs. Large-Group-of-Heroes would be pretty weak.) Also, Peter serves as a link between all of the other characters, and was one of the more proactive characters in actually saving the cheerleader at the beginning of the season. I don't necessary think it's a bad thing that he has the capability to use the powers at will because - at the moment, at least - he isn't exactly a master at it, so he's not a godlike character in any sense.

[quote=Fire(storm);311091]Rogue is a bad comparison to Peter.quote]

Actually Rouge is a better comparison than anybody else, it was revealed later that she can recall the power and memories of anybody she has ever touched, she just couldn't access it due to the same subconscious blocks she placed on her powers that kept her from controlling them in the first place. She was able to do this up until she temporarily lost her powers, including the ones she stole from Ms. Marvel, now she permanently has Sunfires powers.

Synch is still the best. His original power was he Synch's with Mutants in the vicinity with no reason for touch. Just has to be around them. And it was proven with time, he could permanently recall powers.

Sorry, but im right. A mutant who synch's with those around him is closer to peter than a Mutant who needs to physically hold on to you to gain powers temporarely, or a long time to permanently take them

If you read the Neo storyline you'd know that Rogue has also been able to absorb mutant powers from a distance, her body was turned into a living gun and she needed ammo, she abosorbed Poiter from a distance to turn her body into metal. The limits on Rogues powers are all in her head. I had every issue of Generation X and I have never seen Synch recall any powers, even when he was in a future storyline as an adult he had to be in the vicintiy, Synch also has mastery over the powers he duplicates, unlike Rouge and peter who have it at what ever level they absorbed. It was only speculated that Synch may have been able to eventually recall powers if he hadn't died. Rouge and Peter both suffer from abosorbing too much, he falls into comas and she goes crazy. Rouge like Peter stores the powers she takes on a genetic level, unlike Synch who only metabolizes energy signatures while his target is around. Now back to the topic, I hate Peter because he's such a whiney little coward when he has to make any real decisions, I need my brother, I'm a-scared of Sylar, you have to shoot me instead of me flying away or going into the desert, I'd rather turn my new niece into a murderer, what a puss!
