I was not aware of this. Now, apparently, this is old news. But it's news to me and, since we're in the barren wasteland of December television, now is as good a time as ever to discuss why he could have killed the show. I'm going to go ahead and say that Grey's Anatomy dodged one hell of a bullet. I have nothing against Rob Lowe. He was an honorary member of the Brat Pack back in the eighties (although some could argue that he was the weak link). He was great as the villain in "Wayne's World" and on "The West Wing". He participated in one of the first celebrity sex tapes. All good things.

However, Rob Lowe would have been a disaster as Dr. Derek Shepard.

I totally agree!! Patrick Dempsey was the reason I even started watching the first episode Grey's Anatomy and I believe Patrick Dempsey is one of the reason for the show's tremendous success. If Rob Lowe had been cast as Derek, I would have never tuned in. I don't think Rob Lowe would have been able to play Derek the way Patrick has.

I totally agree that Patrick Dempsey is Derek and Rob is more suited for the role he is now playing in Brothers and Sisters. I have been following Patricks career from Lucky Seven, Sweet Home Alabama and he has refined his acting skills. He is that likeable, sexy doctor that we all love. Rob is just not as believable in that part but he is a good actor just not right for that character.

Rob Lowe is smarmy? His arguably best-known role, Sam Seaborn, was the show's poster boy for innocence and idealism.

Patrick IS McDreamy, but I don't think Rob would've been a horrific result.

Rob Lowe is not physically attractive, but I think Derek Shepherd is "smarmy" too. I don't like him.

I totally agree with Princess, Rob is great and I wouldīve really liked to see him as McDreamy, not that I donīt love Dempsey playing it!
