That was bizarre.  Paula Abdul ingested some peyote before the live broadcast, Simon Cowell was openly laughing at her, Randy Jackson shamelessly toed the party line, and Ryan Seacrest told a story about sitting in the backseat of a station wagon.  American Idol celebrated its Top 5 with a quick-fire procession of Neil Diamond covers, which ranged from great to vomitous (I made that word up for tonight).  There was barely any time to breathe in the hour long American Idol – the ten performances were too much for Paula Abdul to handle and she couldn't even remember who sang when.  It was kind of embarrassing.  The American Idol rankings tonight are a little bit tricky, seeing as each member of the top 5 gave two performances.  I'm going to combine their respective merits, and give my rankings based on how they fared overall on the night.

Normally, our hatred of Archuleta is unjustified: we just don't like him. Tonight, it's more than deserved. I agree 100 percent on "Sweet Caroline" - he did everything in hiw power to desecrate a classic, fun song. And between David's weakening voice and that flag waving on the screen in the background...ugh. I wonder if Simon's last minute claim that Syesha is in trouble was a calculated attempt to up her sympathy votes. Either way, the Davids are safe, the other three are in trouble, and that's about all I know.

wow. you seriously got these rankings wrong.
brooke's first song was a nightmare, and jason's second song was so boring.
at least david archuleta can actually sing well.
these rankings aren't very objective at all.

but i do have to agree with you that the show was just bizarre tonight.

then david, then the last two were equally forgettable.

Switch 4 and 5 and you have my rankings. I didn't think Archie did as well as the judges said. He was out of tune.

I didn't think Brooke was so bad on her first song... I totally agree with you on David Archuleta. I listened to the 2 songs once and I didn't want to even listen to it again. I hated it

There's more to singing than just being in tune (which even Arch wasn't). You have to connect to a song, give a strong performance. Archuleta's biggest problem is everything has become so flat and monotone that he takes everything good about na sang and drains it of its energy. That's what he did to "Sweet Caroline," and that's why he deserves to be ranked last. It was almost (ALMOST) as bad as KLC's Beatles butchery.

Almost, you're right, but not that bad.

You wrote: Jason Castro did his Jason Castro thing on both songs tonight. Neither performance was exciting, neither memorable, Other than one song, weeks before, when has Jason ever done anything that was exciting? Memorable? I think the Davids are safe and Syesha should be, but watch Brooke slid by again. Maybe they will only put Syesha in the bottom so Jason and Brooke can be safe again....who knows? Overall this appears to be a weak top 5 compared to other seasons, but I wish them all the best of luck.

There is nothing special about David Cook. The other david was amazing and I think its Syesha's time to go. Nobody can get to the Top 4 having been in the bottom three/two 5 (or 6) times. Jason is not that great-he has a weak voice and I don't think bROOKE WILL GET much further because she's America's answer to Delta Goodrem.
