Don't be a hater – you like Neil Diamond. It's possible you don't realize it, but trust me, you do.  I just spent an hour or so scouring the internet, listening to all the classic Neil Diamond tunes and they're all pretty great.  I wouldn't call myself a Neil Diamond fan – there's a certain stigma that goes along with such a label (mostly, being old).  American Idol is having Neil Diamond come join the top 5 as their mentor this week and all five of the singers will be performing Neil Diamond tunes.  I've seen American Idol fans around the internet claim to be unhappy with this choice of mentor – they shouldn't be.  Neil Diamond week is going to be good – the man has a ton of great songs that fit the diverse abilities of American Idol's top 5.

Great choice for Cook. I'm unfamiliar with your choices for Brooke, Jason and Syesha, but that's only because I don't really like music. As for Arch: I hope he does, because he will butcher that just as he does with any up-tempo song. I'm just worried Arch is gonna get "America" and murder what little soul I have left.

Yeah, I hope to god that no one sings "America." Now that KLC is gone, I think we're safe.

I forgot Neil Diamond did "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon." But no, I've still gotta be a bit of a Diamond hater. This is bound to be my most pain inducing episode since Dolly night.

David Cook - Beautiful noise (suitably updated for rock audience)
Syesha Mercado - Sweet Caroline
Brooke White - I am, I said (with piano accompaniment and soaring notes)
David Archuleta - I'm a believer (Per suggestion)
Jason Castro - Song sung blue

Looking forward to this. Best to all, MM

I like the suggestions for Brooke and Syesha. I'd rather see Cook do a haunting Cookified I'm a Believer or I am, I said. I feel like Archuleta doing I'm a believer has *Disneyland Shrek Attraction* written all over it. Does anyone know if the idols sing two songs this week? In previous years where they had a top 5, the five all sang two songs, but it looks like in seasons 4 and 5 there were two separate themes. I hope the top 4 are singing current hits or hits from the 21st century.

P.S. Does "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" sound super creepy to anyone else? Like he's in love with an underage girl? I really hope no one picks that.

Well, he was only 26 when he wrote that song, so it's not that creepy.

Even though I don't know much about Neil Diamond's music, I think Jason Castro should sing "Play Me". This is one of the few Neil Diamond songs, but I think that it would really work for him because he could play the guitar, and I see it going much better than any other song for him.
