| American Idol's Top 6 faced the silly task of singing musical theater last night, and the world is worse off for it. Perhaps that is being harsh, but American Idol's decision to bring in Andrew Lloyd Webber as the most non-contemporary mentor ever was dubious at best. Two singers – Jason Castro and Brooke White – were leagues and leagues out of their element and suffered greatly for it. In another edition of John vs. Oscar, Mr. Kubicek and I both agree on our bottom two, but we have different predictions on who exactly will be eliminated. We're both fans of Brooke and Jason, but one of them will probably be put out to pasture on tonight's American Idol, thanks only to the poor choice of theme by FOX and the Idol executives. | I think that AI does Musical Theatre night because so many of the past contestants and winners have gone on to star on Broadway. Or win Oscars for film versions of Broadway Musicals. Makes sense to me. My bottom 3 4) Syesha Mercado (she does not deserve it -- but it will be wonderful mayhem if it is Archie -- who does deserve it) 5) Jason Castro Going home: Brooke White And I agree with John about Stephen Sondheim. Totally whole heartedly agree. |

It may be a silly task -- but it does have it validity.

I don't think it's fair to blame the theme on the poor performances of some of the contestants. As a bit of a musical theater nerd, I think that ALW has a body of work that is broad enough to fit all of the contestants. I don't know if they had every show and every song of his to choose from, but there's plenty of ALW songs that are more suited to Brooke and Jason. They just weren't wise enough to pick them.

BuddyD: I too am a bit of a MT nerd and -- I agree with you. It is definitely not the fault of the producers if the contestants are not well versed in the genre of the week.

Sad as it is, Brooke or Jason will be going home. I agree that Dave A. in the bottom three is warranted-- I can't tell the difference among ANY of his performances. Also, as much as I'd prefer Carly in the bottom 3, her performance last night not only didn't make me cringe per usual, it was actually enjoyable. And I hope never to say that again!

Interesting comments. Jason sang as if he had been scratched by a big nasty cat and Brooke, well, she really did not sing much at all but attemped to sing. This is the top 6 of American Idol, not the tryouts. For weeks, Kristy Lee has been bashed here as if you felt it was what people wanted--never giving her credit when she sang well, which she did often. Compare Kristy's worst night to Jason and Brooke this week--even you would have to agree that Kristy was and is far superior. Sad. This had to be the worst week for AI ever. They should just elimiinate both Brooke and Jason and give Carly a strong warning. If there is another week of these types of poor performances, then AI will lose the high ratiings. Bring back Kristy Lee and Michael Johns for even when they did poorly, they were wonderful eye candy!

We know that the performances don't matter to any great degree, it's purely a popularity contest. Bottom 3: Syesha, Brooke, Carly Goes home: Syesha

Clarification: I don't believe that Syesha deserves to go based on performance; that's just my prediction. I think Jason and Brooke have enough support that they aren't dispatched. I hope I'm wrong and either Jason or Brooke have sung their last, preferrably Brooke.
