American Idol 7: David Archuleta's Father - Worst Stage Dad Ever?

David Archuleta is the presumptive winner of American Idol. His eventual victory is assumed by many to be already cemented – no matter what kind of tricks David Cook or Brooke White or Jason Castro pull out of their hats, it will not be enough to combat the tween, saccharine-sweet appeal of The Archuleta. Unless, that is, an epic scandal erupts. There have been rumblings throughout the season that David's father, Jeff, has been a behind-the-scenes nuisance on American Idol. Rumors have abounded for much of the season, but no one has gone on record until now. Naomi Judd, in an interview on The Today Show, said this when discussing David Archuleta and his time on Star Search, on which Judd was a judge: “His dad is like the worst stage dad."

Doesn't David look like someone who has an overbearing stage dad? He looks like he's constantly trying to say or do the right thing and is nervous and skittish too. He reminds me of a kitten. I don't think parents should be allowed on set. Maybe they should up the age???

I used to think his on-stage modesty was fake - maybe it's genuine and he's jsut been beaten down for so long.

Yeah, this scandal isn't nearly epic enough to thwart his chances, but it does make me feel bad for the kid. Come on Oscar, you know you're warming up to him and ready to take over as conductor on the Archuleta Express.

Y'know, I think it's interesting so many think Archuleta will win it still -- all I see everywhere is backlash against his persona and his singing. He's sort of reminding me of Diana Degarmo back in season three, in that he can sing well but doesn't have the emotional maturity to really hit it home. Based solely on crazy Internet fans, I'm thinking David Cook probably has it in the bag. Anyway, sucks about Archuleta's dad -- stage parents are freaky.

Actually, what I like about Archuleta is his ability to imbue his "cheesy ballads" with so much emotion. He really knows how to sell those, and even though he's 16 or 17, he makes me believe he feels them. If anything does him in, it'll be his lack of ability to sing anything uptempo. Those High School Musical loving tweens can't subsist on ballads alone.

Yeah, stage parents are pretty freaky...

The whole deal makes me feel bad for David, but also don't think this will have much of an effect on his time on the show.

Those caps his dad is always wearing do make him look a little shady, though.

man, david, from wat i have heard, has gone through a harsh past with his dad and the very last thing he needs is a scandle. daivid looks so shy and nervous up on stage. hes probably afraid if he messes up, then hes gonna get punished like something his dad might of done. who knows. but i do wish david luck for this week

I honestly think Archuleta senior is behind attacking David Cook for being #1 on Amazon downloads. David Cook is a singer, songwriter who has made records in the basements and garages of band members. Never had the luxury of a record contract or aa $100,000 cash prize, yet he is critcized? He is the total package, with or without Idol. Idol put him in the limelight and I am sure he is truly grateful, but his talent willl make him a star.
