As I do every Thursday, yesterday I got to be a part of the American Idol eliminated contestant conference call. There's never much in the way of super juicy news, but the conference calls are generally pretty enlightening. One question that gets asked every week, and one that's a favorite of mine, is “What song were you preparing to sing next week?” It's always a great mystery how the eliminated singer would have performed said song, but it's fun to speculate. I bring this up because Kristy Lee Cook was asked this same question yesterday, and she gave her answer: she was going to perform “Don't Cry for Me, Argentina,” from the musical Evita. You see, next week is Andrew Lloyd Webber week on American Idol. Admittedly, I'm not the biggest Kristy Lee Cook apologist, but c'mon, there's no way Kristy Lee was going to perform that song well, right? Her answer, in one quick moment, has made me incredibly fearful of what we're going to see come next Tuesday. To read the rest, click here.

I get your point, but as a fan of the Great White Way, I love this week. In my mind, this is the biggest challenge because it requires you to find a song that is not a traditional pop hit and turn it into one. It's the most creative opportunity for these people, and I want to see who steps up. I imagine Archuleta can easily find some stupid sappy love ballad to sing "Some Enchanted Evening," perhaps. Also, lame contestants have the opportunity to cheat and take a song from a revue, like Smokey Joe's Cafe, full of Leiber and Stoller songs (Jailhouse Rock, Love Potion #9) or that ABBA musical.

Also: this is the theme that spawned Fantasia's "Summertime," one of the most memorable performances in Idol history. And as for pop relevance, there was "One Night in Bangkok" from Chess. It's not like anyone's gonna be doing any Avenue Q. However, I'd love it if someone dared to do something from the Buffy musical episode, or if Castro whipped out "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from A Mighty Wind, which is sort of like a musical.

I totally agree with your point about people being forced outside of their comfort zones so late in the competition. I have a soft spot for both Jason and Brooke and I think they do their best when they are in their comfort zone. I just hope Jason does not do another latin version of something ... [impersonation="Simon Cowell"]Didn't like it! Sorry![/impersonation]. I have faith in David Cook, but if you thought about hinm rocking out on Phantom of the Opera as well as I did when I was going to get coffee this morning, well then, perhaps it is too obvious of a choice.

Ugh.... I hate this not because it's Musical Theatre, but because it's Weber. That being said... Brooke should be fine doing her thing to "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar. Other recommendations or song choice predictions.... Carly/McCavity from Cats, Syesha/Memories from Cats, DavidA/Close Every Door from Joseph...Dreamcoat, Jason/Surrender from Sunset Boulevard, DavidC/Phantom of the Opera from it's namesake.

Oh snap, I didn't realize: they HAVE to sing ALW. I thought he was just overseeing a broad musical week. Oh, then this is surely gonna suck. I take back my excitement.

I really like the themes & mentors, even this late in the competition. It shows their ability to find the right song, or their ability to adapt a song. If anything it's often surprising who does well with certain themes. Besides it's obvious it doesn't matter who wins Idol, many losers still potentially have recording careers ahead of them - maybe even (UGH) Kristy Lee Cook.

I do imagine that David A and Sysehsa wil be mud wrestling for "Memories" and Brooke and Carly for "I Don't Know How to Love Him". I think Brooke should do "U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D" from Starlight. CooK "AC/DC" from Starlight
