I'm always wary of mentor nights on American Idol, especially when I'm not intimately familiar with the mentor's discography.  Tonight, Mariah Carey's song book was opened up to the American Idol contestants, and the results were somewhat peculiar.  Mariah grew on me as a person as the episode went along – more so than any mentor I can remember on American Idol, she seemed very interested in nurturing the contestants and making their performances better.  The men had more success with the Mariah songs than the ladies, and Simon Cowell believed this was because the men didn't bring on comparisons to the original tune as much as the women.  I agree.  Mariah has a voice that you just can't mimic – the ladies were going to pale in comparison, no matter what they did.

The hell, is this a late April Fool's Day joke? Dude, David Cook was DA BOMB! That was everything we love about him: taking a known song and changing it to fit his style. I think on his rock album, that would make a great slow ballad. Oscar, have you been brainwashed by the Cult of Archuleta? My rankings? D. Cook, Castro, Syesha, Archuleta, White, KLC, Carly.

YAY OSCAR! Thank you for what you said about David Cook. Everyone I know went on and on about his performance tonight. I fast forwarded after 30 seconds. It was lame. It was Always Be My Baby, for crying out loud! Thank you for also ranking Jason Castro high.

I SO AGREE!!!! He is amazing. And the more you watch it back it just gets better everytime. I think he could top all sales and as many concerts. He's unique best I've seen in I don't remeber how long. It's going to suck not being able to see him every week. If he doesn't win AI then there is something really wrong out there. I'm disappointed in Carly. She has an incredible voice but no warmth or conection with the crowd. She did look better tonight than she has all season. Castro would be my 2nd for tonight, then DA. The guys cleaned up tonight. GO David C. Our hearts and prayers are with you and your family<3. You are amazing. You are a part of me, you'll linger on....... very meaningful to your Brother

John, I'm sorry. It had to happen. Now that everyone has settled into their niche and refuse to leave it, I have to base at least part of my rankings on how well they do in said niche. Otherwise, the rankings would be the same every week. Archuleta, even though I might hate his guts, was very good tonight. And Cook wasn't.

These rankings are so off. David A. is the same every week and Castro cannot sing. David Cook was the number one performance tonight, hands down.

You ranked Castro #! last week and everyone I have talked to across this country said he sounde like Tiny Tim. What does he have to offer? He cannot carry a note or tune.

does anyone else think it's crap that it seems these theme nights are almost all women. Not fair to the guys. If they have to do this they should have a guy and a girl. The guys always seem to have to sing female songs. It's not right. Or they should have them just give pointers and not have to sing the persons songs. And the guys still beat them.......... Go David Cook!!!
