Idol Gives Back aired tonight and it was everybody bit the event we should have expected.   The epic two and a half hour show, however, felt different than last year's show.  It goes without saying that the second edition of anything won't have the new car smell of the first one.  However, what last year's Idol Gives Back had was the audience's assumption that one of the American Idol singers would be eliminated at the end of the night.  Of course, no one was eliminated and this fact actually angered some fans.  This year, American Idol decided not to attempt that ruse again and just put on a straightforward charity event.   Which is fine, because Idol Gives Back is a great cause.  However, it's not an episode of American Idol, and judging by the lack of comments in our Live Thoughts, I'm guessing this year's Idol Gives Back received a lot fewer viewers than last year's.  I suppose we'll find out for sure tomorrow.  What follows are the highlights from tonight's Idol Gives Back.

Tonight was the first time I ever heard Miley Cyrus sing...and I am using that word charitably! One more manufactured pop star like Britney Spears. If she is what passes as a singing star..then by all means bring back Amanda and give her a contract.
Hell, even Kristy Lee Cook could get a contract if Miley Cyrus is the yardstick for talent.

Hold on, so I just got done, and maybe it happened in the overrun (stupid DVR....why the EFF can't you end a show on time, FOX!) But FOX announced that the presidential hopefuls would be there, and I must have blinked, cuz I didn't see them. Did I miss something, or was this false advertising. That's the only reason I watched. Plus: how come Brooke was the only one not to get a solo in "Season of Love"?

Overall, it lacked the emotional connection that last year brought to the stage. So what? For me, Daughtry brought it on home with his lack of words to describe what he'd witnessed. He spoke from the heart. Did I donate? Yes. How can I watch a show week after week, reap the benefit of free entertainment, sit in my warm home and not. Thanks American Idol and all those who shared their talent to embrace those without.

Yeah, John, the presidential hopefuls either never showed up or were cut for the show. Also, the act that Nigel Lythgoe stated was his most anticipated of the evening (Robbie Williams) didn't end up on the show. Why, I have no idea. I guess they needed to make room for more Miley time.

AI also announced that Fantasia and Elliott would be appearing. I know there's more footage from their trip to Angola, but we never saw it (we got a brief glimpse of Elliott in the audience). The sneak preview a couple of weeks ago was really touching -- why didn't they show more of it? I could have done without the extra Miley Cyrus song (and Snoop Dog? Please!)

Was the Sheila E drum kit FAIL on purpose? Did anyone else see that?

They might end up showing the presidential candidates and others who were cut form the event in video packages. I remember they did that last year, and I suspect this year won't be different.

Hey Tickles,

You are an idiot. The girl holds a stage better than most adults. All pop stars are manufactured. Are you a bit jealous of her success, perhaps?
