Brooke White, Carly Smithson, Syesha Mercado, American IdolThese first three weeks of performances on American Idol are like a base coat of paint. The singers all get to solidify themselves and set themselves up for the real competition of the Top 12. Though half of the Top 24 is eliminated, even more than that show that they have no shot at winning this competition.

Tonight the Top 8 women performed, and unlike the guys, these women are all very close in their talents, for the most part. As of now, no one has stepped up as the clear favorite. In fact, I'd argue that as many as four of these women have exhibited signs of becoming the frontrunner, but none has completely seized it. Right now America is faced with a few good and a bunch of average performances. At that point, it's all about who has the biggest fan base.

Thank you for mentioning how unimpressive Amanda Overmyer was. And was it possible for her to be more predictable? I guessed she would sing Joan Jett before she even started singing. I'm also unimpressed with Brooke White, but I think I just hate the whole "regular singer at a Central Perk" vibe that she gives off every week.

Yeah....I think that poor Kady just sinked all her chances. Well she is ready to go home. Last week u could tell she is expecting it....its a shame. She is really fun. Iove Carly. Im just waiting for her to shine more....she have more potential than she is showing right now. I also adore my little philipina girl Ramiele (she is philipino, right)...she is so tiny and cute but have that strong voice. Really great is also Brook. I have to say she really surprised me....

For me, Brooke is the clear front runner of the ladies. Being able to interpret songs to cuit your strengths is incredibly important. There's no one on the show whose performances I look forward to more. And, yeah, Overmyer wasn't any good. But, I HATED Kristy Lee's performance.

Why do you keep saying that David Archuleta is a professional? Since when is competing in a second rate show like Star Search considered "professional." Did he even get a record deal out of it? That's like saying Jordin Sparks was professional for winning those stupid ass teen idol competitions and talent shows.

And do we even know anyone who has made it big from star search?

I think I wrote a sentence that was a bit too confusing. The point wasn't that Archuleta is a pro like Smithson, it's that he doesn't get honest criticism like her. The judges call her out on stuff, but with Archuleta, they turn a blind eye to flaws they would certainly point out with other singers. Even so, being on and winning Star Search is a bit like being a pro, the same way Bret Michaels or Flavor Flav kick off contestants who have appeared on reality shows before them (bad example, but that's what I get for recapping this show and those).

I find Ramiele boring - great voice, but she has no stage presence or originality. She can't rely on her voice alone. The performance itself and how you interpret the song to fit your style are also important, and she fails in both of those. See David Cook, Brooke White, Carly Smithson, and Kristy Lee Cook.
Kady must go. Amanda or Asiah can join her - I don't care which.

I so agree with BuddyD about Brooke White! She and Jason Castro are so much the "anti-Idol" singers. They may be good but not that original. There are a lot of Indie singers out there performing their sincere, sensitive little hearts out. Aren't they looking for an Idol to appeal to those actually buying the music?

Wow, this week was so awful I don't even know how to rate them. I agree that Brooke was #1, in fact the only good (that's all) performance of the 8. This was the worst Idol show I've ever endured.

Maybe it's because the 2 absolute worst performances led the show. I think this sinks Asia'h who refuses to realize her limitations - she simply does not have a diva voice. I think Kady might survive another week though, just because the mediocrity pool is so deep.

Kristy Lee and Ramiele also have negative stage presence, but cuteness might save the later- song choice sure won't. Then Amanda, she looks disinterested in the ordeal and is too much of a niche performer - she may be safe this week, I dunno, but can't survive too much longer. Her negative vibe might send her packing this week though, it's sure to turn people off.

That Smithson's mediocre version of the Lauper song was indeed #2 shows how bad this show really was.
