I get upset when people complain about how bad the 80's were for music.  When they say the 80's were a terrible time for music, what they really mean is that the 80's were a bad time for popular music.  There's a huge difference.  For instance, nowadays no one really complains about the quality of music because, even if you don't prefer Top 40, the internet and iTunes and iPods have allowed everyone and their mothers to search for and find exactly the type of music that suits their fancy.  The Top 40 music is as bad now as it was in the 80's.  But, if you look hard, you'll find that the eighties provided a great deal of quality music.  We don't have to judge the 80's solely on Flock of Seagulls (“I Run” is a pretty cool song, actually).  American Idol is venturing into 80's music this week and, as I did with the guys yesterday, today I've chosen 80's songs for each of the female performers.  These are my ideal choices and, though I know American Idol would never clear some of these tunes, in a perfect world this is what Wednesday's show would look like.

I take it you want Asiah to go home, why else suggest she sing another big song? I get that she thinks she can, but I don't think last week was a case of having an off week. Attempting Whitney would be Idol suicide for Asiah.

What is this thumbs up thumbs down thing? I'm new here and it seems that people got awfully heated about the David Archuleta article and people who had made comments about it were getting thumbs up and thumbs down?? I never noticed it before. I'm sorry oscardahl -- I know you weren't going to visit the subject again -- I just want to know about the thumbs. I do want to say that I think you are a very good and often pithy writer -- which is why I joined BuddyTV -- I've been reading your articles on Idol for a few seasons -- or how ever many seasons you've been doing it -- I don't remember -- and finally broke down and wanted to be a part of the some of the discussions. Either that or I've gone a little nuts after 7 seasons.

The thumbs up/thumbs down is just a way to "grade" another person's comment. Thanks for the compliment - I appreciate it and good to have you on board.

I don't know if Asiah could pull it off either, but if she did it would be a great shove-it-in-Simon's face moment.

Thanks & you're welcome

Asiah was sick last week and she tackled a song that Latoya London killed in season 3. But if Asiah can pull off Whitney -- I agree -- I love it when a contestant makes Simon eat his critism.
