It is undeniable that David Archuleta has become the darling of American Idol this season. The seventeen year old from Utah is blessed with a mature beyond his years voice, an infectious stage presence, and an innocent modesty. All three American Idol judges have had nothing but great things to say about the kid and the country has been buzzing since his stirring performance of John Lennon's “Imagine” last Wednesday. There has been some mild Archuleta backlash, but that's to be expected when someone as saccharine and safe as David hits the national stage. This hasn't stopped Archuleta from becoming the early favorite, going away, to win American Idol this season. But, who is David Archuleta? Where does he come from?To read the rest, click here.

In this country, we have become much more sensiive to those who have been the target of discrimination in the past. Racial, gender and religious discrimination are taboo--unless, of course, you are Mormon. Cudos, Oscar, for not holding back in the face of political correctness. Bash away, bash away.

I was just thinking that if the same tone had been taken against him for being African American or Gay there would be some serious backlash.....

anonymousone, this has nothing to do with race. Being Mormon is a choice. But still, I'm not bashing David as a person at all - I just think the history of the Mormon religion is pretty shady.

Personally, I have problems with Oscar Dahl. His history of uninformed, poorly thought-out articles, the fact that he is a known poseur when it comes to commenting on anything with respect to music or performance, and his laundry list of poor grammar practices (it's vs. its anyone?) are enough for me to completely discount him as a legitimate writer. This has nothing to do with intelligence, revealing your poor cognitive skills to the world is a choice. But still, I'm not bashing Oscar as a person at all - I just think his history as a "writer" is pretty shady.

I've always thought that your articles--about American Idol anyway--somehow lacked that intangible authority lent by competence in the subject matter. It would appear that this extends to other fields as well. I'm Jewish myself, no friend of the Mormons per se, but I fail to see why you feel the need to editorialize on religions you don't like in a television column. This seems an odd forum to talk smack about this kid's hypothetical religion... nothing could be less relevant. Obviously, you can say whatever you want; but I feel much less inclined to return to this site now.

Oh give me break! I hope this doesn't offend you oscardahl -- but I do not consider blogging a traditional form of journalism. To me it is a casual and creative outlet for one's opinion -- therefore why the bashing about correct grammar -- what's correct these days anyway? Grammatical rules and dictionaries are constantly changing. Besides, I was under the impression that a number of the articles written about American Idol were done on the fly while watching the show so that members of BuddyTV could join in? So I doubt the writers are taking the time to spell-check as they go, edit as they go -- so there are bound to be a few slip ups. And why take issue with authority or competence when it comes to music -- or any other medium for that matter? EVERYTHING is based in personal opinion. EVERYONE makes choices in life according to what suits them. EVERYONE has their own ideas about what is good and what is not. Trite -- but it is what makes the world interesting.

By the way -- there are 2 sects of Mormonism -- the LDS and the FLDS -- not that it matters -- but it is the FLDS who have continued to adhere to antiquated practices, ie: polygamy. And I may be wrong -- but I would venture a guess that if David or Brooke are Mormon -- they are LDS. I don't think a practicing member of the FLDS would be allowed to compete on Idol. But -- whatever. How many grammatical errors did I make?
