Song choice, song choice, song choice.  The American Idol judges will not shut up about the freaking song choice.  The fact is, and always will be, that American Idol contestants are going to make incredibly poor decisions when it comes to what songs they sing.  Part of this is simply bad judgment, but we have to be fair – the contestants are often ham-strung by clearance issues.  From what former contestants have said publicly, the American Idol contestants are given a specific list of songs and are told to list their preferences in order.  But, they don't always get the songs they want.  This season, Top 24 finalist Garrett Haley told the media that he didn't get to sing any of his top 3 choices.  Just for fun, we decided to pretend that song clearances were no issue and choose the perfect song for each Top 16 American Idol finalist.  Today, we'll look at the guys, ladies tomorrow.

As someone who knows nothing about music, here's my only contribution. Danny Noriega=Wham. Perhaps a tad too obvious, but for some reason, I can see him doing a crowd-pleasing "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go."

I almost actually penciled him in for a Smiths song, but thought that was a little too on-the-nose. I think Simon's head would explode if Danny sang Wham.

I love your pick for Michael Johns. I also love Pride (In The Name Of Love) but Danny doesn't have the chops to pull it off so I hope he does NOT sing that.

I've been pretty critical of Noriega, but the dude has a big voice. That's a tough song, but I think he might be able to pull it off.

This week is going to make me cringe. The 80s were the worst decade of music in recorded history. If the above list is indicative of the good songs, that's proof enough. Ick!

To be more specific, I'd say 1977 - 1987 is the cesspool of recorded music, and pretty much all genres. Not until grunge made rock rock again without the silliness of heavy metal and the overproduced soullessness of arena bands was there a recovery. Country hasn't recovered yet - pop country music is pure dreck. End of rant!

I don't think the 80's were THAT bad. The Romantics? Blondie? Depeche Mode? Eurythmics? Suzanne Vega? Smithereens? The Cure? INXS? REM? Simply Red? Traveling Wilburys? Tracy Chapman? Edie Brickell? Elvis Costello -- Veronica? And someone could sing Angel Eye for Jeff Healey. I'll stop now. Oops -- I think I may be painting myself cheesy. Are my musical preferences showing? And -- well -- I seriously doubt that any of my favorite songs are in the AI catalog of approved music.
