Tonight was a night of surprises on American Idol. I fancy myself something of a professional elimination predictor, but even my finely tuned prognostication skills were only able to correctly predict one of the four eliminated singers. I even named a handful of contestants who I thought could legitimately go home tonight, and one of those who actually did go home wasn't on my list. Such was the craziness of American Idol tonight. Even the judges seemed baffled at the results. To read the rest, click here.

I called 3 of 4, not heeding TheEditor's advice that Amanda was safe. I picked Alexandrea because I thought she probably had the least fan base. Not helped by her invisibility until last week. She least deserved the boot. I picked Carrico because he couldn't connect with the voter base he wanted, pure and simple. Faux rocker = no votes. Yeager had nothing going for him, no fan base, no dynamite performance to attract one (like Chikesie's which saved him). I was wrong about Alaina, though I was choosing between her and Alexandrea as the gal who I thought would join Amanda. I'm still amazed, despite TheEditor's reasoning, that her gawd-awful performance (and looks) didn't end her run. At least we avoided a reprise of it.

Vote for the Worst is on a mission to keep Amanda and Danny N. Sad, but true. So unfair to those who deserve another week.

AI could stop that by switching to a vote off scheme for the early rounds. I don't think VFTW has any impact after a point - say the final 8. Voting off would have better results in early rounds, but I admit that it's less compelling to vote against someone than for someone you like. They probably wouldn't be able to report that 30M votes were cast using a vote-off scheme. The current scheme has the result that mediocrity is ousted before outright awful, but after a certain point the awfuls can't accrue enough voters - henceforth known as The Sanjaya Limit. The downside of this is that median performers don't get a chance to improve, while the awful remain awful and on the air.

There are other voting modifications that would give the judges the ability to save a contestant that they thought was unjustly bounced. I dunno that it's worth that much effort. All of this assumes that Idol doesn't tamper with the votes as is.

Last nights show made me a little sad. Which appalled me. Darn this show's train-wreck-must-watchability! Watching kids really go for their dreams and then be thwarted by a fickle and cruel America. But I really hate to see contestants go home when they don't really deserve to yet. Amanda should have gone home last night. She's been consistently terrible. And it kinda looked like she knew it, though she is rather stoic. Kady's reaction to Alaina being eliminated instead of her was what really got me and of course I hate it when other people cry. Wow -- I've gotten soft over the years! I really feel it should have been Amanda and Kady. I have no quarrels with the men eliminated -- though it must hurt to be called out as a poser on national tv when all you are trying to do is try something new -- but I say -- don't do it in front of America. So what hair band do you think Amanda will bludgeon next week? And that's a good one -- The Sanjaya Limit. I'm shaking my head and ch

VFTW gets too much credit. As I said previously, they picked Amy Davis in week 1, so clearly it's not all powerful. It may add a slight boost, but for the most part, Danny and Amanda are both unique people with solid fanbases. As for voting out people in early rounds, that would totally backfire. If anything, it would give more incentive to VFTW to become Vote Out the Best, and they would probably get enough people to kick out someone like David Archuleta. Actually, that would be kind of hilarious.

While I remember the name Alexandrea Lushington, I don't remember who she is or anything she sang, so I'm not surprised she got the boot. She was total filler. As for Jason Yeager and Robbie, I only remember them for all the wrong reasons.

AIAddict: They wouldn't let her do "You Shook Me All Night Long". Too bad! It would either be great or hilarious. TheEditor: As I theorized: voting off is less compelling so I think it might dampen participation, which could indeed abet a Vote Off The Best campaign. The 2 worst performances in my - admittedly short - memory were Where The Boys Are and Wayward Son, yet the former got Amy Davis bounced and the latter seems to have fit your theory. What's the difference?
