Looking at it realistically, American Idol doesn't need to improve itself.  The show is fine the way it is.  If you were the most successful reality show in the history of the medium, if you were by far the most watched TV show on the planet, if you had created and nurtured a number of current pop stars, would you change?  No, probably not.  There's no need, right?

Actually, there's something to be said for constant change and improvement.  Although Idol has still been the number one primetime TV show in the US this past year, the ratings have stumbled a bit.  American Idol would be served well if they decided to add some new wrinkles to the show.  TV longevity is often borne out of a show's willingness to change throughout the years.  There's a reason the shelf life of prime time game shows is so low: they stay the same.  Never underestimate the short attention span of us TV viewers.

They will never show the Hollywood rounds because they don't want us to see all the vocal talent they eliminate in favor of "look and/or style."

They need someway to eliminate the affect that "vote for the worst" has on the show. This movement has eliminated some good talent along the way and kept some that was far from good. Not sure how to do this, but this movement is affecting the show and voting much greater than they will admit.

1) I agree, cut the result show to 1/2 hr. And stop torturing the bottom contestants with the "we'll tell you after the break [or song...]" crap. I only watch the last 5 minutes anyway.
(2) Reduce the has-been celebrity "mentors". eg: Noone, LuLu, Gibb
(3) If not eliminate theme weeks altogether, then at least eliminate themes that disadvantage contestants. [Although LaKiska hit a home-run on Bon Jovi week; who'd a thunk it?]
(4)Make voters register to cut down on the repeat - and automated - voting. Then though they couldn't announce that 34 bizillion votes were cast, which they don't want to do.
(5) Pick contestants with better musical ability and stop inflicting the likes of Antonella and Sanjaya on us.

Many of the contestants complain that AI wouldn't let them perform certain songs. Does anyone know the reasons for this?

The guy who sang Free Ride - then was bounced - complained that that song was like his 4th pick.

Oh yeah and ...

(5) Require the judges to judge!
Every technical mistake should be pointed out - even if from one of their favorites. Off pitch, off key, off time, flubbed lyrics, came in early or late should all be noted.

I thought the judges were lax on this. I don't know whether it's overt favoritism, but Melinda flubbed lyrics at least twice, Blake had un-noted timing issues, Jordin off pitch, etc... None of these should be disqualifcations, but they should be pointed out by the *judges*.

The voting system needs an overhaul. When I hear about the same teenie girl/boy voting 50 times (or more) for their favorite "because he's soooo cute" rather than performance it makes me gag.

Cut out some of the "mentoring". It's just not needed every week. Also, bring in a few people who really have the ability to give useful advice, not someone who has a new album to push. Less is more sometimes. It would be nice to see the contestants sing a longer version of their songs as the show progresses. I would also love to see past contestants on a little more often. Give them the exposure instead ? Clay, Chris, Bucky, Elliot,Alot of these people have a really big fan base who watch the show and would love the chance to see them again.
