American IdolAmerican Idol kicks back up tonight, and I couldn't be more excited for the next stop in the Sanjaya Malakar saga.  If he walked on stage dressed in a turtle costume and hopping on a pogo stick, then sang "Hava Nagila", would he still make it through to next week?  Anthing's possible at this point.

Anyway, Gwen Stefani (you know, the former member of a good rock band who sold out and started making pop songs about Japanese school girls) will be joining us this week.  Which should be fun.  What follows are my live, unfiltered thoughts while watching the episode. I'm going to try and update as the show goes along.

  • And it begins.  We're live from Hollywood.

  • Seacrest asks whether the crowd likes Gwen Stefani.  I think the maniacal yelling means yes.

Simon is right when it comes to Sanjaya it really doesn't matter what the judges say there are still idiots out there that will vote for him. He is horrible and has made this competition a huge joke. I don't see how anybody could say anything positive about his perfomances.

All I have to say is See you next week Sanjaya, even though you suck so much.

Seems like American Idol has become a fashion show and a pretty face competition, not what it was intended to be - a singing competition. This needs to change. Should the singers wear a uniform of some sort? The judges should stop commenting on how pretty everybody looks- These comments are distracting to the voters!Simon made a comment on one of the shows saying if he had heard that certain performance on the radio, he would have turned it off. That's the way voters should evaluate the singers- by the voices of "the chosen ones" One's body can be "fixed", but you can't change someone's vocal cords, their creative ability, or their ability to "live" the songs they sing.
I also think that the judges should be able to vote or create a score for the each singer every show to which America's votes will be added. The judges are pro's, they are there for a purpose and that purpose should be served better.

More proof that this is the worst batch of AI contestants yet - only liked Gina this week. Of course they were all saddled with a bad theme.

LaKisha - B (bad song); Chris S. - D (he's gone); Gina - A-; Sanjaya - F; Haley - B-; Phil - C (karaoke); Melinda - B- (yawn); Blake - C (I don't get his appeal); Jordin - C (bad song); Chris R. - C- (bad song choice)

I agree Remain Unknown: radio test is good. None of these performances would pass it.

At some point in the pop culture lifespan, the public stops being a promoter and starts being a satirist - where the popularity now becomes a point of ridicule instead of admiration. AI has now passed that point. Whether it is Howard Stern or the website trying to promote the worst performer (millions of hits a month!), the results will never again correlate with talent. The correlation was pretty weak before this, but it is pretty much gone at this point. After Brandon and Stephanie left, the two most marketable performers on the stage (though Jordin is close), I knew that I would NEVER watch the show again.

Gina's song was sung by The Pretenders.
