Well, that was an interesting show. The theme of last night's American Idol performance episode was Diana Ross. Diana showed up to help all the contestants and, as a requirement, everyone had to sing a Diana Ross song. Everyone. I understand that Diana was prolific in her own time, but still, with the judges constantly critiquing song choice, it seems unfair to place such strict boundaries for choosing songs to perform, especially this late in the game and with the stakes so high. The result was a night of mostly unmemorable songs, with a couple of winners thrown in. Granted, that's not much different from your typical night of performances this season, but I think it took away the opportunity for some singers to surprise us.As we've done throughout the Hollywood rounds, I'm going to give out my performance grades for all twelve singers from last night. I was a little disappointed overall, but I attribute that to the Diana Ross experiment. She'll be performing live on tonight's results show; it'll be interesting to see if she has anything left in the tank. To read the rest, click here.

Are you kidding me? Last night's airing, except for a couple of performances was like watching a really bad drag show. If American Idol wants the show to stay contemporary, then why have a Diana Ross night? Completely ridiculous.

Sorry, but I think Haley and Gina stink for the girls, of course the guys it is hard because none have anything outstanding they have shown. Simon has the right idea - dont watch the performer - just listen without looking at them and act as though it is on the radio. I did that last night and it is amazing the difference it makes. Gina has the punk rockers votes and Haley is on there for her looks neither one can sing... totally off key most performances... definately not star quality.....

Gees, just cut everybody but Melinda, Lakisha, and MAYBE one other person. That might as well happen because those two are leaps and bounds above any other performer this season- maybe any season. The guys, as a whole, are terrible this year- ESPECIALLY SANJAYA!!!!!!!!! America, STOP VOTING FOR HIS HAIR. If he shaved it off he wouldn't have made it past the first week. Brandon is also just....bad. He hasn't had any good performances either, but shouldn't go home tonight, I suppose.

I really THINK the show screwed all the idols last night. YES Diana is GREAT, BUT not everyone can sing her songs, just like other artists. Some can some can't. Maybe this show is REALLY rigged after all.......Doesn't look like a real competition. out of 12 it is only between 2.....

Enjoyed this piece a lot. A couple thoughts: If you watched the show before, you'll know that weekly themes have been a fixture since the first season. Once you get to the final rounds, the singers all have to choose from a certain genre, or in sometimes, a certain performer. Just off the top off my head, they've had Stevie Wonder week and Queen week in past seasons. Also, I think it would be a mistake to assume Melinda is a shoo-in at all. I'd say, historically, the strongest vocalist has had a less than 50/50 success rate in winning the whole thing. Out of past winners, only Kelly, Fantasia, and Ruben were arguably the best singers out of their AI season.

Last night's show was very boring. Singing Diana Ross songs restricted the talent levels for many especially the guys. They need to open up the themes so that there is more flexibility in choice of songs and artists.

I always listen to the performances instead of watching, because many of them especially at this point are distracting. My top three from last night were Melinda, Jordin and then Lakisha. My only hope is that when either Melinda or Lakisha sings a gospel song (and I KNOW one of them will), they will not be eliminated because of it like Mandisa was last year.

that episode was hard to watch. it was bad. no emotion. very little talent. no charisma. the only one i liked was jordin. the rest of the show was so bad i chose to flip over to the pussycat dolls show after a few notes of crappy singing. just give it to jordin and be done with it. where are all the daughtrys. mcphees, yamins etc.? crap. crap. crap.
