Antonella Barba - American IdolAmerican Idol contestant Antonella Barba is an attractive girl.  Those who have been following the supposed “scandal” involving Barba may think this statement is obvious, or inconsequential, but they're wrong.  It may be the most important fact when discussing the nature of the “scandal”, what the ramifications will or should be, and what it all means.  You'll see what I'm getting at in a second. First (for those of you who haven't had access to the internet tubes for the past week), is a brief rundown of the situation involving American Idol hopeful Antonella Barba:

Antonella Barba, a 20-year college student from Jersey, is a top 20 finalist on American Idol.  After last week's episodes aired, a topless photo of Antonella hit the internet.  But, it wasn't really topless.  It was of Antonella and a group of friends on the beach, all covering their breasts with their hands, presumably while sunbathing.  Scandalous?  Not really.

I dont think they would kick her off the show, like you said, she'll just be voted off in the next round.

If they want to keep calling the show "American Idol" they can't kick her off the show. This is America damnit, and there is nothing wrong with a little bit of friendly skin.

I'm no prude, and Lord knows based on my college partying history, I will never run for public office! I don't feel I can judge this young woman's behavior.

However, I believe the fountain pictures were taken in or on the WW II memorial in DC. I believe there were several laws broken when she stepped into that fountain. There is a precedent set with the disqualification of any contestent with the mere hint of a criminal record; previous contestants with arrests were DQ'ed before any convictions.

I believe the trespass onto the WWII memorial is a felony - and a federal one at that. For this reason, Antonella should be DQ'ed. Period.

She should not be kicked off the show. Period. America can vote her off (although I actually love her vocals - bad song choice last week). The girl is a real victim here. Even if she did trespass onto Federal property, she has been convicted of no crime - none of us can convict her of it, and she was certainly never arrested. PERIOD. (BTW, Christine, there are many people, former addicts/alcoholics who serve brilliant public careers - your inability to serve public office is a personal choice.)

She should be removed. Christine is right. Antonella's behavior at the WWII monument is very anti-American and a poke in the eye to veterans, thus anti-Idol material.

The wet t-shirt shots appear to show Antonella splashing around in the WW2 memorial. It's a disgrace.

Don't assume she'll be eliminated by the voting any time soon. Remember she's no longer being judged by Simon, Paula, and Randy (although they will always be making comments after the performances) but by voters who like her looks and perhaps the embarrassment it will cause the show is she really goes far.
