I think it would be difficult to get the intensity required if translated to a written medium. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it'd be very hard.

No, I think it's quite manageable as long as you read good fanfiction, I'd recommend "Cum Tacent Clamant" written by Writetolive, because this story is so intense, so beautifully written... It's just great, not perfect but great.
